NISAR launching LIVE: Now the danger siren will ring before an earthquake or tsunami like Kamchatka

The successful launch of NISAR is a major achievement for India and the world. This satellite can save millions of lives by providing advanced information about earthquakes and tsunamis like Kamchatka. Its dual radars, all-weather capability and free data policy make it unique. For India, it will be a game-changer in disaster management, agriculture and water management.

The day of 30th July 2025 became a historic day for India and the world, when NISAR

(NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar) The satellite was successfully launched from Satish Dhawan Space Center in Sriharikota at 5:40 pm. This partnership of ISRO and NASA sent a satellite into the Earth's orbit, which will give advance warning of natural disasters like earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, and landslides. It is being called the MRI scanner of the Earth, because it can take such fine pictures of the Earth's surface that it can capture even changes of a centimeter.

Kamchatka earthquake and the need for NISAR

On July 30, 2025, an earthquake of magnitude 8.8 struck the Sea of Okhotsk near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula, which created the threat of tsunami in 12 countries—Russia, Japan, Hawaii, California, Alaska, Solomon Islands, Chile, Ecuador, Peru, Philippines, Guam and New Zealand.

The strength of this earthquake was equal to 9,000-14,000 nuclear bombs like Hiroshima. 5 meter high waves came in the Kuril Islands. People in Fukushima, Japan are scared of the memory of the 2011 tsunami.

It is very important to get news of such disasters in advance. This is what NISAR will do. This satellite can detect the slight movement of the ground before an earthquake. It can predict the possibility of a tsunami. Its data will make disaster management fast and accurate, which will reduce loss of life and property.

How will NISAR give earthquake-tsunami warning?

NISAR is an expert in giving advance news of natural disasters.

Earthquake: It detects small movements in fault lines (cracks in the earth). From this, the possibility of an earthquake can be estimated.

Tsunami: It will give tsunami warning by monitoring sea movements and coastal flooding after an earthquake.

Volcano: It can give news of an eruption by looking at the activity beneath the volcano or swelling of the ground.

Landslides and floods: It will alert about landslides and floods by measuring the movement of soil in the mountains or the water level of rivers.

Why is NISAR important for India?

Disasters like earthquakes in the Himalayan regions, floods in Assam-Kerala and landslides in Uttarakhand are common in India. NISAR will help in saving lives and property by detecting them in advance. Also.

Agriculture: Farmers will benefit from information about crop and soil moisture.

Water management: Water shortage can be dealt with by measuring the level of groundwater and rivers.

Coastal security: Marine environment will be saved by tracking coastal erosion and sea ice.

Launch story

NISAR was launched by ISRO's GSLV-F 16 rocket. This was the first time GSLV sent a satellite into a sun-synchronous orbit. The satellite weighs 2,392-2,800 kg. It is as big as an SUV. The launch was watched live by millions of people on ISRO's YouTube channel. Earlier this mission was scheduled to be launched in March 2024, but it was postponed due to the problem of antenna overheating. NASA fixed it. Now this mission is completely successful.
